2020: HB 1116 Insurance; uninsured motorist coverage; revise liability of an insurer upon refusal to pay an insured
Session 2019-20HB 1116 extended the cap on penalties in bad faith refusal of payment for uninsured motorist claims to nearly 4 times the current common penalty payout. These penalties would have left insurers with nearly incalculable potential obligations and created a perilous environment for insurers. Passage of this bill would have led to higher insurance rates for all Georgians, higher costs for goods and services, and genuine concern from the business community about the unpredictability of liability management in Georgia.
Although passed out of the House Special Committee on Access to Civil Justice, HB 1116 did not receive a vote in the House of Representatives.
